Atkins diet


A diet system formulated by Dr Robert Atkins in the early 70's.  Atkins diet is based on a very low carbohydrate, ketogenic diet.  Split into four phases, the Atkins diet encourages the body to break down body fat as an energy source, producing ketones to fuel the body in preference to glucose obtained from dietary carbohydrates.

It is important to note that the body does not need to go into such an advanced state of ketosis to utilise body fat as a fuel.
