Home > Glossary > A B CAn antigen is a substance such as a food protein, that stimulates the production of an antibody (a protein produced by the immune system that attaches itself to a foreign antigen weakening and destroying it). There are 2 types of antigens. Exogenous are those that have entered the body from the outside such as via inhalation. Endogenous antigens are those generated within the cell as a result of normal cell metabolism, or because of viral or other infection. An antigen can provoke a "fight" response in the body especially when this is a result of an allergy or food intolerance.
