Allergic rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis is also called hayfever and is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose. This is caused by the body's release of histamines in reaction to particular antigens or airborne substances.

Allergic rhinitis is the most common allergic condition and is particularly common in Australia. There are two types: seasonal and perennial. Both types can develop at any age although onset in childhood is most common. Although allergy to a certain substance is not inherited, increased sensitivity may be genetic.

Symptoms include:

Itching, sneezing, runny nose, redness, tenderness, congested ears, sinus drip at the back of the throat, watery eyes, fatigue, headache.

Treatment:

Avoidance of the allergen is the best treatment however this is not always possible. Alternative treatments focus on modulation of the body's immune response and centres around diet and lifestyle adjustments. Early treatment can help prevent an increased sensitisation to other allergens.
