Home > Glossary > A B CCholecalciferol is vitamin D. It is a fat soluble vitamin that supports the absorption of Calcium and Phosphorous within the body. Deficiency of vitamin D can greatly increase risks of developing osteoporosis, joint damage and arthritis. Vitamin D is also need for islet cells in the pancreas which produce insulin for the uptake of sugar into the blood. Research indicates vitamin D also has an impact on white blood cell regulation which helps maintain a healthy immune system. Vitamin D is the only vitamin that your body is capable of producing on its own. This occurs after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. The UV rays trigger vitamin D synthesis. One to two hours of sunlight per week is normally sufficient. The rest should come from diet or supplements. Fortified foods are common sources of vitamin D. Foods which are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids are also good sources of vitamin D; cod liver oil, mackerel, salmon, tuna and sardines. Smaller amounts are found in margarine, egg yolk, liver and beef. |
