Dermatitis
Dermatitis or eczema is a general term describing skin inflammation. Most types are characterised by an itchy pink or red rash, however there are 3 distinct categories:
Contact dermatitis/eczema
This is an allergic reaction to something irritating the skin and is manifested by one or more lines of red, swollen, blistered skin that may itch or seep. It normally appears within 2 days after contact with the sensitising substance.
Atopic dermatitis/eczema
Dermatitis characterised by itching, scaling, swelling and sometimes blistering. In early childhood it is referred to as infantile eczema. Redness, oozing, and crusting are common. This normally occurs on the face, inside the elbows and behind the knees.
Seborrheic dermatitis/eczema
Called cradle cap, in infants, seborrheic dermatitis can be dry or moist. It may present with greasy scales and yellowish crusts on the scalp, eyelids, face. Also on external surfaces of the ears, underarms, breasts and groin.
