Food Intolerance
Food intolerance (or Food Sensitivity) is often misunderstood with food allergy and can be difficult to diagnose. Sometimes substances within foods such as chemical additives can increase the frequency and severity of headaches, skin rashes, stomach upset or irritable bowel. As opposed to allergy, it's not that these substances are the cause of the symptoms, but rather that they aggravate an underlying condition.
Symptoms vary greatly depending on the amount of offending foods eaten and the degree of sensitivity. Unlike allergies, food intolerance does not cause an immediate immune response (to food proteins). The most common indicators are swellings, mouth ulcers, stomach pain, eczema, tiredness or aggravation of other health problems.
Diet manipulation is the most effective way to manage food intolerance however professional advice should always be sought, from a Dietitian, Naturopath or Nutritionist with experience in this area.
