Glucocorticoids

Glucocorticoids are produced by the adrenal cortex. Factors that can initiate their increased production include presence of the stress hormone cortisol. A reduction in testosterone can cause an excess of cortisol to be produced which is often the cause of osteoporosis in men. Nutrients such as vitamins A, E and C reduce cortisol levels.

Excess glucocorticoids within the body frequently occur due to treatment with steroids such as cortisone. This causes a rapid decrease in bone resorption – increasing susceptibility to osteoporosis. Research shows that at the start of glucocorticoid treatment, a dramatic decrease is noted in bone mineral density. If taking cortisone, it is recommended to monitor bone density and consider supplementation to counteract this effect.
