Glucosamine

Glucosamine is a purified natural substance derived from crustacean shells. In supplement form it exists either as Glucosamine Sulphate or Glucosamine Hydrochloride.

Glucosamine is an amino sugar and component of connective tissues, membranes and mucopolysaccharides (glycosaminoglycans). It is important for the body's synthesis of glycosaminoglycans that form the structure of connective tissue (tendons, ligaments, cartilage and synovial fluid). Glycosaminoglycans hold water giving these tissues the characteristics of cushioning and elasticity.

Glucosamine has been found to stimulate the synthesis of new connective tissue cells, stimulating repair and new cartilage production and collagen synthesis and experimentally damaged cartilage. Supplementation with glucosamine has been found to assist the relief of joint pain and tenderness and help mobility of the joint by inhibiting degradation and stimulating the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans which help to restore joint function.
