Impact carbs

Manufacturers recently began using the statements "Impact Carbs" or "Net Carbs" on products. While not formally recognised, these terms are provided to assist weight-conscious and carb-conscious consumers in distinguishing between the amount of carbohydrate having an impact on blood sugar (and potentially insulin release), and those that do not.

As various conflicting definitions apply to the usage of "net carbs", Aussie Bodies has decided to use the term "impact carbs", aligning its definition with Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) guidelines. As displayed on recently launched or repackaged Aussie Bodies products, the "impact carbs" total is consistent with the FSANZ definition of "available" carbs and specifically refers to:

Carbohydrate not included as "impact carbs" fall under the FSANZ definition of "un-available" carbohydrates, and includes ingredients such as:

These ingredients are regarded as not significantly contributing to blood sugar levels or insulin response.

To prevent misinterpretation, products making an "impact carbs" claim are required under FSANZ guidelines to clearly define what they mean by these terms, and to refer consumers to the nutritional panel for the total carbohydrate count.
