Isoleucine

An essential amino acid and one of the three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), which include valine and leucine, isoleucine is important in stablising blood sugar and energy levels. It is required to create haemoglobin (the red blood cells that carry iron throughout the body) and impacts blood clot formation. Bodybuilders often use isoleucine as a means of preventing muscle proteins from breaking down during exercise. It may also be beneficial in the prevention of muscle wasting and promoting tissue repair after trauma or surgery.

Those at greater risk of isoleucine deficiency include athletes and mountain climbers – people involved in strenuous athletic activity under extreme pressure and/or high altitude. Medical advice should be sought before undertaking supplementation.
