Polyphenol


A polyphenol is a type of antioxidant characterised by the presence of several phenol functional groups which are thought to be instrumental in combating oxidative stress within the human body, a syndrome contributing to neurodegenerative diseases and some cardiovascular diseases.

The main source of polyphenol antioxidants are nutritional – found in a wide array of foods such as legumes, fruits including berries, vegetables such as broccoli, parsley and onions, as well as red wine, chocolate, green tea, olive oil, bee pollen and many grains.

The term flavonoid is sometimes used for polyphenol.
