Vitamin B6
Pyroxidine or vitamin B6 is known as the workhorse of nutrients because it is involved in so many bodily processes (performing more than 100 jobs innumerable times a day). Functioning primarily as a co-enzyme to speed up chemical reactions in the cells, B6 is a water-soluble vitamin, is stored mainly in muscles and is required regularly from the diet. Available in 6 forms the type of B6 used most in supplements and fortified foods is pyroxidine hydrochloride.
Available as a single supplement, in combination with other B vitamins (vitamin B complex) or as part of a multivitamin.
What it does:
Pyroxidine is essential for the conversion of protein foods into amino acids and is therefore related very closely to vitality. Studies suggest vitamin B6 relieves symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), sleep difficulties, acne and nausea (such as morning sickness in pregnancy). It protects against kidney stones and against the harmful effects of gamma radiation and x-rays. It plays a role as building block for neurotransmitters and is therefore recommended for various conditions related to the nerves.
Deficiency:
Low B6 levels can cause stress, anxiety, irritability, adrenal exhaustion, ulcers and depression. Women taking the oral contraceptive pill (OCP) or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may have higher needs. Other risks factors of deficiency are malabsorption syndromes (such as Crohn’s Disease), cirrhosis of the liver and overactive thyroid gland and heart failure. Mild deficiencies can raise homocysteine levels, increasing the risk of heart disease and vascular disease (building up to heart failure if severe). Symptoms of severe lack are skin disorders and an inflamed tongue. As are neurological problems including insomnia and in really extreme cases brain wave abnormalities. Other risks include anaemia, kidney stones and lowered resistance to infection (owing to pyroxidine’s contribution to the production of antibodies).
