Vitamin E


A group of eight fat-soluble substances known as tocopherols and tocotrienols of which alpha-tocopherol is the most potent.

What it does:

Vitamin E can be likened to a safe-guarder because it functions as an antioxidant, retarding the oxidation and subsequent destruction of other nutrients in the body, especially those susceptible to oxygen deterioration – such as vitamin C. Tocopherols are also essential for the synthesis and use of various amino acids.

Every cell in the body burns up oxygen to produce warmth and energy. Vitamin E regulates this action preventing cells from burning out too quickly. Assisting the functioning of the entire nervous system, vitamin E increases the power and activity of muscles, improves circulation and improves the number, activity and potency of the male sperm cell. It also normalises the activity of the ovaries in women while helping to detoxify harmful substances within the body

Topically vitamin E helps promote skin healing and protect against sunburn.

Tocopherols are found in wheat-germ, oils, margarine, nuts and seeds. Tocotrienols can be sourced from palm oil, barley and oats.

Deficiency:

A deficiency of vitamin E may lead to anaemia, angina pectoris, easy bruising, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, varicose veins, colitis, epilepsy, gallstones, hair loss, dandruff, headaches, sinusitis, arthritis, constipation, muscular cramps, emphysema & rheumatism. Because vitamin E is found mostly in foods high in fat, a low-fat diet may make you more susceptible to inadequacy.

Essential associated nutrients for most effective absorption: Manganese and sulphur, vitamins C and B group vitamins.

Sources:

Tahini (sesame seed paste), seeds, nuts, wheat-germ oil, millet, rice, cucumber and whole grains (however about 90% of the vitamin E content is lost in the processes of refinement).

If taking vitamin E supplements, combine with a meal to decrease stomach irritation and increase absorption.
