Green lipped mussel confirmed as anti-inflammatory wonder, study finds

The anti-inflammatory properties of New Zealand green lipped mussels have been given a significant boost, as two new studies report the potent benefits of the mussel's lipid fraction.

Researchers, including some from Australia's RMIT University reported that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid extracts from the green-lipped mussel inhibited leukotriene and cyclo-oxygenase activity, both of which are involved in the inflammatory process.

Chronic inflammation, induced by over-activity or lack of control of the body's normal protective mechanisms, has been linked to a range of conditions including heart disease, osteoporosis, cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease and type-2 diabetes.

Results from both these studies support the use of commercial mussel extracts as an alternative for conventional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and fish oil treatment in the relief of the symptoms of arthritis.

They studied and extracted the free fatty acid fraction from the mussel which is thought to originate from the algae and other micro organisms unique to New Zealand waters. This helped them identify the most bioactive fractions.
