Omega 3s shown to reduce heart attack risk

TUESDAY, MAY 09, 2006

A recent review in the British Medical Journal recommended omega 3 supplements for the prevention of coronary heart disease.

The review outlined several large trials, highlighting the finding that omega 3 fish oil capsules reduced the risk of a second heart attack by 30 to 48 percent in people who supplemented after an initial heart attack.

Beneficial effects included reduced atherosclerosis of the arteries, lower blood triglyceride levels, lower blood pressure, prevention of blood clotting, anti-inflammatory action, and reduction of abnormal heart rhythms.

Arterial disease is becoming more accepted as a chronic inflammatory condition rather than a problem with cholesterol only. Omega 3 fatty acids, with their anti-inflammatory properties, are being increasingly proven as an important nutrient for heart health.
