Bircher Apple and Raisin Muesli
Healtheries Apple and Raisin Bircher Muesli is a delicious, easily digested and sustaining blend of grains, seeds, apple and raisins. It is wheat free, rich in dietary fibre, and a natural source of iron, B vitamins - niacin and folate, and essential omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
Bircher Muesli is based on Swiss nutritionist, Dr Bircher-Benner's original recipe created in the late 19th Century for patients at his clinics. Dr Bircher believed that adding fruit, unprocessed grains, and seeds to the diet would dramatically improve his patient's health. Oats and flaxseed are now well known for their beneficial effects on cholesterol levels, while whole grains mixed with seeds and dried fruit balances and maintains blood glucose levels for sustained energy and appetite satiety.
Bircher muesli is designed to be soaked overnight or briefly microwaved to activate enzymes in the seeds and wholegrains, and to assist digestion. Flaxseed especially needs soaking to release its gel-like soluble fibre, which nourishes healthy gut flora.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, required to boost the metabolic rate and provide mental and physical energy for the day's activities, and for maintaining a healthy weight. Bircher muesli with its low GI* provides a nutritious and appetizing way to achieve this.
*What is the Glycemic Index (GI)?
Not all carbohydrate foods are created equal; in fact they behave quite differently in our bodies. The glycemic index or GI describes this difference by ranking carbohydrates according to their effect on our blood glucose levels. Choosing lower level GI carbs - the ones that produce only small changes in blood glucose and insulin levels - is the secret to long-term health, reducing your risk of heart disease and diabetes, and is the key to weight management. The Glycaemic Index for Healtheries Bircher Muesli was tested by the University of Otago Department of Human Nutrition.
