Home > Health > Q&As > Women's healthPrior to taking whey protein, both pregnant women and parents of young children should consult a physician to be sure whey protein is right for them. Nevertheless, whey protein is a complete high quality protein and should be an acceptable protein source for healthy pregnant women, provided they are not allergic to dairy proteins. With children it would normally only be recommended due to a specific dietary need (such as a very lean older child needing to 'bulk up'). Young children generally shouldn't need a protein supplement because that may fill the stomach and prevent them from first eating a healthy balanced diet. The second most abundant component in whey protein is alpha-lactalbumin, which is one of the main whey proteins in human breast milk. Infant formulas often contain whey protein, including special formulas for premature infants. Hence, whey is more specific for promoting rapid growth if and when other sources are unavailable or impossible to digest (for instance in cases of sickness or inability to chew). In cases of pregnancy it is especially important to seek advice of your Health Practitioner before supplementing your diet. |
