Aussie Bodies Iron woman hits Hawaii

BY JULIE SEAMER

Aussie Bodies sponsored athlete Belinda Harrison is heading to Hawaii and then Arizona for back to back ironman competitions after recovering brilliantly from a bicycle crash and broken arm in May.

Leading up to these maiden events for the season Belinda was immersed in her biggest preparation load yet, training 6-8 hours daily including up to 5 swims, 3 weight sessions, 6-8 rides and 7-9 run sessions weekly. "Most of my training included specific efforts towards the target times I hope to achieve in my upcoming events, and recovery sessions to accommodate for the long miles on the legs". Now looking forward to racing in Hawaii on October 11th and Ironman Arizona 5 weeks later she says "This is the first time I have backed up two major races in such a short time frame and my training has been structured around getting the best result possible at both races".

A lot of Belinda's swimming was with paddles and bands for strength, the results of which were evident with her swim times consistently improving.  Riding was also a major focus with a huge emphasis on strength work and endurance. "Ergo sessions have been instrumental in improving my power on the bike and the specific time trial and strength/endurance efforts within my rides have been very beneficial. My running has also been very specific with plenty of hill repeats and efforts within my sessions.  When I'm fatigued and my GPS watch ensures I stick to the times. It keeps me honest and is not my favourite training tool when my legs are toasted and have to kick in for an effort!".

With the aim of accruing some solid weeks of training under her belt Belinda rode a very solid 195km, ran a 1.30 half marathon (fastest female time), ran a 5.30 on the track for the mile (fastest female time) and swam a 5.29 for 400m in the pool. "All my times and efforts were on track, with several new personal bests. I go into these two races with a lot more race experience and determination and relish the opportunity to challenge myself mentally and physically".

Racing Hawaii is an opportunity of a lifetime for most Ironman athletes – one never to be underestimated due to the many factors that make it a tough event. Belinda says "It is very hard to predict my result here as I'm amongst the world's best and feel this will be a great learning experience for me also. Ironman Arizona 5 weeks after will certainly be a physical test, but one I feel I'm ready for". She adds "I read a quote that sometimes keeps it all in perspective: 'Ironman doesn't create character, it reveals it'. So on that note, be sure that I will give it everything I have on race day."
