Boost your body's antioxidant status with whey

Thursday, September 18, 2008

By consuming whey protein glutathione (GSH) levels within the body are increased. GSH is one of the body's primary anti-oxidants. It protects the body from molecular damage caused by free radicals, resulting from exposure to environmental pollutants (smoke, carcinogenic chemicals etc) and the oxidation of fats.

Glutathione can only be synthesised within the body and requires adequate supplies of the nutrients L-Glutamine, L-Cysteine and Selenium.  It also involved in protein synthesis, DNA and immune function 1 .

Day-to-day stressors compromise glutathione levels including cigarette smoking, emotional stress, excessive exposure to ultraviolet light and radiation, household chemicals, heavy metals, tissue injury, inflammation and iron overload. Studies also show a correlation between depleted GSH levels in declining health though advance ageing 2.

In terms of specific organs, GSH is especially important for body areas most directly exposed to toxins, such as the liver.  This explains why alcoholics have low levels of GSH. Deficiencies in GSH have also been associated with lung disease reiterating that if you smoke or drink alcohol, this is a vital nutrient. Because low GSH levels are additionally implicated in HIV /AIDs and cancer, both human and animal studies suggest that whey protein intake may play a role in protecting against these diseases 3-7.

If these facts don't sing the praises of GSH enough, there is suggestive evidence that oxidative stress contributes to neurological disorders such as Parkinson Disease, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease 8-9. As GSH levels decrease, oxidative stress and therefore risk to these disorders increases. There is also a clear link between people suffering with chronic fatigue and oxidative stress. Continued use of GSH by immune cells (lymphocytes) to counter environment and personal stress depletes GSH reserves, reiterating the importance of supplementation through dietary means.

Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) is the protein perfectly matched to the needs of the human body for muscle growth and recovery, tissue repair and immune health. Compared to isolated whey proteins, WPC naturally contains higher levels of immune-boosting immunoglobulins, lactoferrin and the amino acids that make glutathione, the body's most powerful antioxidant and detoxifier, which commonly depletes after exercise.

Aussie Bodies Perfect Protein contains 91.5% Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC), the protein perfectly matched to the needs of the human body not only for muscle growth, recovery and tissue repair but immune health. Consider it insurance for an on-going empowered defence system!
