What is selenium and what is its value as a supplement?


Selenium is a 'trace mineral' that is among the most recent to be categorised as essential for human health. As a trace mineral it is only required in very small quantities, however without adequate levels a range of health problems can ensue, including poor skin and hair condition and poor functioning of the cardiovascular system. In recent years the spotlight has been turned to selenium's role as an antioxidant, protecting the body from damage by reactive free radicals, that are the result of everyday living and are even more prevalent as a result of intense exercise, environmental pollutants, smoking, stress and overly fatty foods.
