Home > Slimming > News > ExerciseResearchers have found that taking a 20-minute break in between two 30-minute exercise sessions will help you burn more body fat. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology compared the fat metabolism between a single bout of prolonged exercise and repeated bouts of exercise (equivalent in intensity and duration). When each exercise session was split up with a prolonged rest, fat metabolism was enhanced. This raise in metabolic rate didn't result in differences between kilojoules burnt between each exercise. There was however a difference in kilojoules burnt from the mobilisation of fat stores within the body. Danish and Japanese researchers involved in the trial noted that "the relative contribution of fat oxidation to the energy expenditure showed significantly higher values in the repeated trial than in the single trial during the recovery period". So next time you feel like a rest mid-work-out, don't feel guilty. Put your feet up, and take it, in the name of science (and a leaner physique). Just be sure to complete your second session! |
