Antioxidant-rich green tea aids in weight control

FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2000

Green tea, a rich source of immune-strengthening antioxidants, may aid in weight control as well as illness and injury, according to European researchers.

The benefits of green tea in helping to ward off heart disease, cancer, obesity and other illnesses have for some time been widely extolled.

Strong support for these claims has also come from some members of the scientific community.

In the most recent example, a University of Geneva study found that a diet supplemented with green tea extract resulted in increased fat oxidation and led to increases in energy reserves beyond the effects of ingesting caffeine.

This is supported by the results of a recent University of Milan study which tested the effects of green tea compounds on damage to human leukaemia cells caused by iron treatment.

It found that green tea protected cells from injury and may help reduce oxidative damage linked to the development of various diseases.
