Are low carb diets just a fad?
Low-carbohydrate diets have been around for many years but have come into vogue in recent times, buoyed along by celebrity endorsements and an influx of diet books.
It is important to distinguish between a fad and a trend. Market research indicates there is a trend in the general population to reduce the intake of carbohydrates. I believe this is an encouraging trend as carb consumption has for many years been excessive, particularly with regards to processed or refined carbs (sugar and flour-rich foods).
As for specific low carb diets, many are likely to come and go as fads. But there are some sound dietary principles underlying the low carb approach.
Because there is no universal definition, people have developed their own notions of what is "low".
It is never healthy to cut out a whole food group or severely reduce it, whether it be protein, carbohydrate or fat. The average person has a diet too high in carbohydrates, particular in relation to the energy they are burning each day. The solution is not necessarily to go low carb, but to lower your carbohydrate intake to a level that ensures all three food requirements - protein, carbohydrate and fat - are consumed in moderation.
